The Demonata #4: Bec: Book 4 in the Demonata seriesThe Demonata #4: Bec: Book 4 in the Demonata series by Darren Shan
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.54
Wow. This book is amazing! It is the 4th book in the Demonata series, which is my favorite series of all time. Each book is different and very exciting. If you enjoy reading horror and fantasy, you will love these books. Bec is an entirely new plot to the series, so you don't have to read the first 3 to understand Bec. I would recommend reading the first three to get a background of the demonata.
Demonata #2, The: Demon Thief: Book 2 in The Demonata seriesDemonata #2, The: Demon Thief: Book 2 in The Demonata series by Darren Shan
Buy used from: $3.02
This is book 2 of the Demonata series. Books 1, 3, and 5 have the same characters and general storylines, but books 2 and 4 have almost all new characters (the protagonist’s uncle is a character). This book takes place before book 1. The main character is a small child who gets thrown into the world of the demonata, and there is plenty of fascinating plot twists.
Battle RoyaleBattle Royale by Koushun Takami
Buy used from: $5.99
This is a horror/science fiction novel about a futuristic society where a class of 9th graders is taken to a deserted island and is given weapons. The last one alive gets to go see their family again. The students wear collars that explode of they are in a restricted zone of if no one dies in 24 hours. Fantastic and fast paced, this book will not let you put it down.
The Demonata #3: Slawter: Book 3 in the Demonata seriesThe Demonata #3: Slawter: Book 3 in the Demonata series by Darren Shan
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.33
A movie about Demons that will be the scariest movie ever made. But it only uses the bottom of the B-list celebrities. Grubbs (the protagonist) goes to the movie set for a once in a lifetime opportunity. Until they find out that the demons are real...
The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, Book 2)The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, Book 2) by Philip Pullman
Buy new: $7.50 / Used from: $0.01
The Subtle Kinfe is the second book in the His Dark Materials series, and is much better than the first, The Golden Compass. It has far more action and suspense in it and is a much quicker read. The end result is a book that can't be put down.
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie WarWorld War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.65
This book is written in a style I have never seen before. It is set in the future and the human race has barely survived an encounter with zombies, and it came to be known as WWZ. The author is a journalist who wants to tell the history of the Zombie Wars. So, he collects interviews of those who had encounters with the zombies. It is impossible to wait to find out what happens next.
The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials, Book 3)The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials, Book 3) by Philip Pullman
Buy new: $7.50 / Used from: $0.01
The third edition of His Dark Materials was not as good as the second. I was slightly disappointed by the ending. Pullman focuses too much on religion and at sometimes pages are dedicated to the history of the somewhat fictional Church in the series. Overall, it was a good book with an exceptionally good part involving Lyra's parents and an angel.
Ender's GameEnder's Game by Orson Scott Card
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $1.04
The world is in a war with the Buggers, an alien race that wants nothing but to destroy the human race. And who will lead our forces against such a vicious enemy who kills indiscriminately? Ender, a child genius trained in a special school in space called the Battle School. Ender's Game tells the remarkable tale of Ender and his school life and his space battles against the Buggers.
Demonata #1, The: Lord Loss: Book 1 in the Demonata seriesDemonata #1, The: Lord Loss: Book 1 in the Demonata series by Darren Shan
Buy used from: $3.66
The first book of the Demonata series and the place to start if you want to read some really good books. Grubbs Grady's parents told him they were going to a ballet and left him at a relative's house. He snuck back home and he opened the door to his house. And he saw his mother, father, and sister being grotesquely ripped to shreds by demons called the Demonata…
Snakehead (Alex Rider Adventure)Snakehead (Alex Rider Adventure) by Anthony Horowitz
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $0.01
The latest Alex Rider Adventure, Snakehead takes place somewhere most of us aren’t familiar with – Southeast Asia. After being blasted into space, Alex crashes into the ocean off the coast of Australia. The plot got surprisingly complex, given the reading level was low. The story was good and it had a lot of action. The foreshadowing is easy to decipher.
The Pilgrims of Rayne (Pendragon)The Pilgrims of Rayne (Pendragon) by D.J. MacHale
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $0.01
Bobby Pendragon is a Traveler, which means that he can go freely to different “territories” (dimensions). His mission is to stop Saint Dane from destroying Halla (everything in all of the universes). The reading level is comparable to Snakehead, so it is a good book for anyone ages 10-16. The plot was good, with several surprising twists, but I was dissatisfied with the ending.
The Children of Hurin: Deluxe EditionThe Children of Hurin: Deluxe Edition by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: $47.14 / Used from: $2.93
JRR Tolkien is one of my favorite authors of all time, and I was excited to read this book. It was quite depressing, and the story was tragic. The chapter titles gave away what happened in the chapter, which annoyed me. I wonder what happens in a chapter called “The Death of Turin”? Only read this book if you are a die-hard fan of Lord of the Rings, otherwise you may find it boring.
Ptolemy's Gate (The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Book 3)Ptolemy's Gate (The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Book 3) by Jonathan Stroud
Buy used from: $0.01
The ending to this book is the best I have ever read. You will never see it coming. The series is worth reading just for the ending. The rest of the book was only a little better than average, but the ending... wow.
The SilmarillionThe Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: $26.40 / Used from: $15.49
This book is for fans of Lord of the Rings, and should be read before The Children of Húrin. The Silmarillion is mainly about the creation of Middle-Earth, as well as the fates of those who were around in the beginnings of the world. I found the part where it explained the spider in Lord of the Rings very interesting. I also liked every part with Balrogs (the fire beasts with the flame whips.)
Ender's Shadow (Ender, Book 5)Ender's Shadow (Ender, Book 5) by Orson Scott Card
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $1.70
This story follows the same exact plot as Ender's Game, but it is in the point of view of one of Ender's friends and generals, Bean. The origins of Bean was very interesting, being a kid from the streets of the dog-eat-dog city of Rotterdam. Other than this, the story is nothing new.
Tales of the Bounty Hunters (Star Wars) (Book 3)Tales of the Bounty Hunters (Star Wars) (Book 3)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I was surprised on how good this story was. I didn't expect much, but I couldn't stop reading it. My favorite tales were the tale of IG-88 and the tale of Bobba Fett. The tale of IG-88 had some very interesting twists in it, like that he made copies of himself, so there was actualy 4 IG-88's.
The Golden Compass, Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition (His Dark Materials, Book 1)(Rough-cut)The Golden Compass, Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition (His Dark Materials, Book 1)(Rough-cut) by Philip Pullman
Buy new: $15.61 / Used from: $6.89
This is the first book in the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman and is a very good fantasy read. Some parts were confusing, but they cleared up later in the book. The main character is Lyra, and the Golden Compass is actualy a truth-teller that she has the ability to read. I liked the mention of prophecies and the mysterious foreshadowing.
Magician Apprentice - Volume 1 (Magician Apprentice (Numbered)) (v. 1)Magician Apprentice - Volume 1 (Magician Apprentice (Numbered)) (v. 1) by Raymond E. Feist
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $11.05
This book is a surprisingly good read. It is a fantasy book with lots of magic. It intervined with science fiction a little when it involved another race called the Tsurani. They have weapons and they don't look too friendly...
PreyPrey by Michael Crichton
Buy used from: $0.01
This is a science fiction/thriller by the man that wrote Jurassic Park. The concept is brilliant and I could do nothing but read until I finshed it. At first it seemed like something my mom would read, but I got into it and I loved it too. (and it turns out that this is one of my mom's favorite books)
The Demonata #5: Blood BeastThe Demonata #5: Blood Beast by Darren Shan
Buy new: $13.25 / Used from: $0.31
This book should be higher than it is, I was just mad about the cliffhanging ending and the what seems like septuple crossing that goes on. Also, it was my last of my Demonata reading marathon, where I read 1 and 1/4 books each day. It is still a good book though.
Shade's ChildrenShade's Children by Garth Nix
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
A science fiction novel by Garth Nix set in the future where when kids turn 14 they get sent to the "meat factory." I know the name sounds fun and seems like a place where you would want to be sent, but no. They cut out your brain and muscles and put them into a mind controled creature that maintain control.
American Gods: A NovelAmerican Gods: A Novel by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $2.99
This book is a terrible science fiction novel by Neil GAIman. And this book by Neil GAIman has a part that is well, disguisting and uncalled for, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the story. There is plenty of violence and grotesque things. Please don't read this unless you have a liking for gross dirty things.
66 Days Adrift: A True Story of Disaster and Survival on the Open Sea66 Days Adrift: A True Story of Disaster and Survival on the Open Sea by William Butler
Buy new: $14.49 / Used from: $1.54
The most boring book I have ever read, and that includes the boring stuff we've read in school. How many times do you want to hear, "Bill! A shark! Ah! I hope it doesn't rip the raft!" I kind of wish that these people weren't rescued so they couldn't write such a terrible book. (Mabye a little harsh, I wish they never sunk)
